[学英语] 这样的中国学生在哈佛毕业典礼上演讲

5月26号,中国留学生何江作为优秀学生代表在哈佛大学毕业典礼上发表演讲。何江是来自湖南的85后小伙,他是首位在哈佛毕业典礼上演讲的大陆学子。

哈佛大学每年从全校数万名毕业生中各选出一名本科生和一名研究生,代表毕业生发言;因此毕业典礼上的演讲被视作哈佛大学给予学生的最高荣誉。

在当天的演讲中,生物系博士何江讲述了自己中学时代被毒蜘蛛咬伤的故事……

他当然没有从此变身蜘蛛侠,但是切肤之痛和后来的求学之路让他逐渐认识到科研的意义和研究者的责任。

TheSpider'sBite

WhenIwasinmiddleschool,apoisonousspiderbitmyrighthand.Irantomymomforhelp—butinsteadoftakingmetoadoctor,mymomsetmyhandonfire.

Afterwrappingmyhandwithseverallayersofcotton,thensoakingitinwine,sheputachopstickintomymouth,andignitedthecotton.Heatquicklypenetratedthecottonandbegantoroastmyhand.Thesearingpainmademewanttoscream,butthechopstickpreventedit.AllIcoulddowaswatchmyhandburn-oneminute,thentwominutes–untilmomputoutthefire.

Yousee,thepartofChinaIgrewupinwasaruralvillage,andatthattimepre-industrial.WhenIwasborn,myvillagehadnocars,notelephones,noelectricity,notevenrunningwater.Andwecertainlydidn’thaveaccesstomodernmedicalresources.Therewasnodoctormymothercouldbringmetoseeaboutmyspiderbite.

Forthosewhostudybiology,youmayhavegraspedthesciencebehindmymom’scure:heatdeactivatesproteins,andaspider'svenomissimplyaformofprotein.It'scoolhowthatfolkremedyactuallyincorporatesbasicbiochemistry,isn'tit?ButIamaPhDstudentinbiochemistryatHarvard,Inowknowthatbetter,lesspainfulandlessriskytreatmentsexisted.SoIcan’thelpbutaskmyself,whyIdidn'treceiveoneatthetime?

Fifteenyearshavepassedsincethatincident.Iamhappytoreportthatmyhandisfine.Butthisquestionlingers,andIcontinuetobetroubledbytheunequaldistributionofscientificknowledgethroughouttheworld.Wehavelearnedtoeditthehumangenomeandunlockmanysecretsofhowcancerprogresses.Wecanmanipulateneuronalactivityliterallywiththeswitchofalight.Eachyearbringsmoreadvancesinbiomedicalresearch-exciting,transformativeaccomplishments.Yet,despitetheknowledgewehaveamassed,wehaven'tbeensosuccessfulindeployingittowhereit'sneededmost.AccordingtotheWorldBank,twelvepercentoftheworld'spopulationlivesonlessthan$2aday.Malnutritionkillsmorethan3millionchildrenannually.Threehundredmillionpeopleareafflictedbymalariaglobally.Allovertheworld,weconstantlyseetheseproblemsofpoverty,illness,andlackofresourcesimpedingtheflowofscientificinformation.Lifesavingknowledgewetakeforgrantedinthemodernworldisoftenunavailableintheseunderdevelopedregions.Andinfartoomanyplaces,peoplearestillessentiallytryingtocureaspiderbitewithfire.

WhilestudyingatHarvard,Isawhowscientificknowledgecanhelpothersinsimple,yetprofoundways.Thebirdflupandemicinthe2000slookedtomyvillagelikeaspellcastbydemons.Ourfolkmedicinedidn'tevenhavehalf-measurestooffer.What'smore,farmersdidn'tknowthedifferencebetweencommoncoldandflu;theydidn'tunderstandthatthefluwasmuchmorelethalthanthecommoncold.Mostpeoplewerealsounawarethattheviruscouldtransmitacrossdifferentspecies.

SowhenIrealizedthatsimplehygienepracticeslikeseparatingdifferentanimalspeciescouldcontainthespreadofthedisease,andthatIcouldhelpmakethisknowledgeavailabletomyvillage,thatwasmyfirst“Aha”momentasabuddingscientist.Butitwasmorethanthat:itwasalsoavitalinflectionpointinmyownethicaldevelopment,myownself-understandingasamemberoftheglobalcommunity.

Harvarddaresustodreambig,toaspiretochangetheworld.HereonthisCommencementDay,weareprobablythinkingofgranddestinationsandbigadventuresthatawaitus.Asforme,Iamalsothinkingofthefarmersinmyvillage.Myexperiencehereremindsmehowimportantitisforresearcherstocommunicateourknowledgetothosewhoneedit.Becausebyusingthesciencewealreadyhave,wecouldprobablybringmyvillageandthousandslikeitintotheworldyouandItakeforgrantedeveryday.Andthat’sanimpacteveryoneofuscanmake!

Butthequestionis,willwemaketheeffortornot?

Morethaneverbefore,oursocietyemphasizesscienceandinnovation.Butanequallyimportantemphasisshouldbeondistributingtheknowledgewehavetowhereit'sneeded.Changingtheworlddoesn’tmeanthateveryonehastofindthenextbigthing.Itcanbeassimpleasbecomingbettercommunicators,andfindingmorecreativewaystopassontheknowledgewehavetopeoplelikemymomandthefarmersintheirlocalcommunity.Oursocietyalsoneedstorecognizethattheequaldistributionofknowledgeisapivotalstepofhumandevelopment,andworktobringthisintoreality.

Andifwedothat,thenperhapsateenagerinruralChinawhoisbittenbyaspiderwillnothavetoburnhishand,butwillknowtoseekadoctorinstead.
